Thailand’s Coronation Day is a national holiday, observed annually on May 4th to commemorate the coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama X), which took place on May 4th, 2019. In 2026, May 4th falls on a Monday so the public holiday will be observed on that day. If it falls on a weekend, it will be observed on the following Monday.

Traditions and Observances

The day is marked by various ceremonies and public displays of loyalty to the monarchy. Government offices, schools, and many businesses will be closed in observance of the holiday.

  • Religious Ceremonies: Buddhist ceremonies are held at temples across Thailand, offering prayers for the King’s reign, the country’s prosperity, and peace for the people.
  • Royal Ceremonies: Members of the royal family, joined by senior officials and the diplomatic corps, will attend ceremonies to mark this occasion.
  • Public Tributes: National flags, flags bearing the King’s emblem, and images of the King will be displayed in homes, businesses and public-spaces.
  • Community Activities: Merit-making events, such as almsgiving and volunteer activities, particularly under the ‘Royal Volunteers’ initiative, are organized in honor of the King.

History Behind Thailand’s Coronation Day

Thailand has celebrated Coronation Day for over 170 years to honor the kings of the Chakri Dynasty. According to the Royal Institute’s Encyclopedia of Thai History, the coronation ceremony tradition began during the reign of King Rama IV. Before 2017, Thailand’s Coronation Day also honored the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (wRama IX), who was officially crowned on May 5th, 1950.
