Thailand is encouraging travelers to explore the country in a more environmentally conscious way with 11 low-carbon tourism routes designed to reduce emissions while supporting local communities.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports through the Department of Tourism, aims to promote travel experiences that minimize environmental impact while preserving natural resources and strengthening regional economies.

The routes form part of a broader effort to encourage tourism that is both sustainable and community-focused. They also come amid a renewed focus on energy security.

Low-carbon tourism emphasizes travel practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while highlighting local culture, natural landscapes, and community livelihoods.

The concept of low-carbon tourism reflects a growing global awareness of the environmental impact of travel. Governments and tourism industries around the world are increasingly exploring ways to reduce emissions while maintaining the economic benefits that tourism brings to communities.

Thailand’s approach centers on encouraging travel that prioritizes environmental protection and community participation. By directing visitors toward carefully designed routes, tourism authorities hope to balance visitor experiences with the protection of natural resources.

The routes span multiple regions of Thailand, connecting destinations known for their cultural heritage, nature, and traditional ways of life. The 11 routes include:

  • Northern Thailand:
    • Chiang Rai–Phayao

  • Northeast Thailand:

Each route highlights a different aspect of Thailand’s landscape and culture, from mountain scenery and rural communities to coastal ecosystems and historic towns.

Travelers following the routes are encouraged to engage with local traditions and environments in ways that promote conservation and support local economies.

For example, some routes focus on community lifestyles and traditional culture, while others showcase nature-based tourism such as coastal environments, forests, and mountain landscapes.

Beyond environmental goals, the low-carbon tourism routes also emphasize local economic development. By guiding travelers toward community-based experiences, the program aims to support small businesses, local guides, and cultural enterprises that depend on tourism income.

Community tourism has increasingly become part of Thailand’s tourism strategy, allowing visitors to experience regional culture while ensuring that tourism revenue benefits local residents. Through these routes, travelers can explore parts of Thailand that combine natural beauty, cultural heritage, and everyday local life.

As global tourism continues to evolve, initiatives such as low-carbon tourism highlight how destinations can balance environmental responsibility with meaningful travel experiences.
