As the countdown begins to the 33rd SEA Games, Thailand is proud to be the host country for this prestigious event, set to take place from December 9 to 20, 2025. The competition will span across three host cities: Bangkok, Chonburi, and Songkhla. Additionally, the 13th ASEAN Para Games will be held in Nakhon Ratchasima from January 20 to 26, 2026. In a move to embrace both sports and sustainability, the Green SEA Games initiative aims to minimize environmental impact, ensuring that this edition of the Games will not only highlight athletic excellence but also promote eco-friendly practices throughout the event.
The upcoming 33rd SEA Games in Thailand will showcase the nation's dedication to hosting a grand and sustainable event, in line with the government's policies and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' vision. Under the themes of "Green SEA Games" and "Sustainable Paralympics," the Games will be held with a dual focus on athletic excellence and environmental conservation. Environmental protection and sustainability have long been a core priority for Thailand, with both public and private sectors placing great emphasis on waste management, recycling, and waste reduction initiatives. These efforts play a crucial role in safeguarding the environment. The 2025 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games will serve as a platform to reinforce and expand these environmental goals, ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of the competition.
The 2025 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games are prioritizing clean energy usage throughout the events. For example, electricity will power the athletes' transportation vehicles, and public mass transit systems will utilize energy sources other than fossil fuels. In addition, the games will actively promote carpooling among athletes and spectators, aiming to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming. This initiative is also linked to the concept of "Carbon Footprint," a measure of the total greenhouse gases produced throughout the lifecycle of a product. Each product will carry a carbon footprint label, allowing consumers to see the environmental impact before making a purchase or using the service. The ultimate goal is to continually improve and make the event more environmentally friendly, creating a lasting impact on sustainability. As part of the sustainability efforts for the 2025 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games, plans are in place to recycle certain types of waste materials to create the medals awarded to athletes. With both events set to present a large number of medals to competitors, this initiative will significantly contribute to environmental preservation through the circular use of materials. This approach emphasizes the importance of recycling and reusing, a vital practice for the health of our planet, not only for today but for the future as well.
In addition to recycling, the 2025 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games aim to reduce plastic usage—one of the most difficult materials to break down—by replacing it with biodegradable alternatives or eliminating production altogether. The events will promote the use of technology and mobile applications as substitutes, further conserving natural resources.Public awareness campaigns will emphasize environmental education, fostering a culture of eco-consciousness and environmental stewardship among all participants. This initiative not only demonstrates the nation's commitment to sustainability but also highlights the role of sports and tourism as vehicles for promoting health and well-being. By hosting the SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games, Thailand will not only create an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators but also contribute significantly to the global mission of preserving and sustaining our environment for future generations.
