U.S.-based multinational news agency Cable News Network (CNN) has confirmed a historic shift in its New Year coverage, moving its Asia-Australia countdown broadcast base from Hong Kong to Bangkok. The move comes as Bangkok countdown celebrations grow into one of the major New Year destinations in Asia and amid recognition as “the most-visited city in 2025,” according to a Euromonitor survey.

According to a Thailand In-Depth report, the live broadcast will feature the magnificent scenery of ICONSIAM and Wat Arun as the primary backdrop, replacing the traditional Victoria Harbour view.

Bangkok will serve as the central hub for the region before the signal is passed to major global cities like Abu Dhabi, London, and New York. This strategic move signals international recognition of Bangkok as a true “Global City” and the new center of Asia.

The “Amazing Thailand Countdown 2026” is co-organized by ICONSIAM, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Running from December 27th to December 31st, 2025, the event highlights the kingdom’s festive spirit.

A historic “4D” aerial display serves as the centerpiece. This world-first show integrates advanced drones with eco-friendly fireworks stretching about 1,400 meters along the Chao Phraya River. The performance is choreographed to pay tribute to the royal grace of Her Majesty the Late Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother.

The five-day festival features an extensive entertainment roster led by international icon Mark Tuan. He joins more than 200 Thai artists for continuous performances at River Park, which offers free walk-in entry for the public.
