Chiang Mai has officially been named the No. 1 Best City in Asia in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Awards, earning a stellar score of 91.94 from readers who praised its warm hospitality, flavorful cuisine, and immersive cultural offerings. This marks a major milestone for Thailand’s beloved northern city, which also secured No. 2 in the world overall, reaffirming its status as a must-visit destination.
While Bangkok came in at an impressive third place in Asia, just behind Tokyo, Chiang Mai stole the spotlight for its mix of historic charm, scenic landscapes, and vibrant street life. Visitors raved about iconic sites like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, ethical elephant encounters, and the city’s lively night markets, while praising its “super cordial people and amazing food”.
The government and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrated the recognition as proof of Thailand’s readiness to deliver quality travel experiences and lead as a regional tourism hub.
Naturally, Chiang Mai’s rise is about more than just temples and tasty noodles (though the Khao Soi alone is worth the trip); it’s also about the city’s deep-rooted commitment to cultural heritage, sustainable development, and creative expression.
As a UNESCO Creative City for Crafts and Folk Art, Chiang Mai is home to thriving artisan villages like Bo Sang, known for hand-painted parasols. Visitors can also sample herby Sai Ua sausages in backstreet eateries and browse handcrafted goods and evening street fare at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar.
Creativity is a way of life in Chiang Mai. From digital nomads in artisan cafés to university-led innovation hubs like Chiang Mai University’s Science and Technology Park, the city merges centuries-old craftsmanship with 21st-century ingenuity.
During the cool season, visitors are spoiled for choice on what to do. Earlier in January, the city became a floral wonderland with over a million blooms on display during the signature Chiang Mai Flower Festival, which runs parallel with the charming Bo Sang Umbrella Festival. Come November, skies light up with floating lanterns during the Yi Peng Festival, a breathtaking celebration of renewal and reflection.
Finally, in December, the Chiang Mai Design Week will draw global creatives with exhibitions, maker markets, and workshops rooted in innovation, sustainability, and Lanna tradition.
With its mix of natural beauty, cultural depth, and creative energy, Chiang Mai has clearly struck a chord with travelers the world over, further certified with this latest crowning as Asia’s best city in 2025.
