Many of Bangkok’s public transit systems ground to a halt when a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar and sent tremors as far away as the Thai capital. Most of these systems have resumed operations, though authorities continue to inspect key infrastructure and high-rise buildings.
Bangkok’s metro lines, which handle an average of 1.41 million passengers per day, were forced to take safety precautions and suspend operations after the capital experienced tremors originating in Mandalay, Myanmar, which is reeling from the country’s worst earthquake in a century.

As of this report, the BTS sky train system has resumed operations. Meanwhile, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has confirmed that, thus far, structural inspections across its network found no irregularities. The Yellow Line and Pink Line have resumed full operations, though Min Buri Station remains closed pending repairs. The Purple Line, which was the subject of misinformed concern on social media, was also deemed structurally sound.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has ordered the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to perform safety checks on all rail infrastructure, particularly along the Red Line suburban rail network. This comes after a construction crane fell onto a rail switch repair facility. The facility has been closed to allow for an investigation into the incident.
As national rail systems undergo inspections, interprovincial lines are being rerouted to depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. Those in need of assistance can contact the 24-hour SRT Customer Service Center hotline at 1690.
The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) has reported that all expressways remain safe and operational, with the notable exception of the on and off ramps of the Din Daeng Interchange. EXAT officials have barred entry to the ramps pending further safety assessments, after falling debris endangered motorists below.
On March 28th, the earthquake had force several rail lines to suspend operations, stranding commuters in the city and forcing many to walk home or rely on more expensive, sometimes exploitative, ride-hailing services.
As Thailand regroups, commuters are advised to stay updated through official channels and report any concerns to the authorities. Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukool Pruksanusak has warned against fraudsters seeking to exploit this tragedy by issuing fraudulent SMS messages or social media with suspicious links to malware.
Any messages that appear to be fraudulent can be reported to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau hotline at 1441.
