The rhythmic beat of traditional Thai drums, the scent of incense curling into the evening air, and the synchronized movements of thousands of Muay Thai practitioners paying homage to their masters — this is the World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony, and it’s an event unlike any other.

On March 16th and 17th, 2025, fighters from all over the world will converge at Ayutthaya Historical Park, the heartland of Thailand’s ancient capital, for a weekend of martial arts, history, and deep cultural reverence.

A weekend of tradition and combat

As part of Thailand Summer Festivals 2025 under the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year initiative, this year’s event is themed “A Once-in-a-Lifetime Muay Thai Experience in Thailand.” A showcase of fighting prowess, the ceremony also dives into the spiritual core of Muay Thai, honoring its centuries-old traditions.

What exactly is Wai Kru Muay Thai ?

Wai Kru Muay Thai is a ceremonial practice deeply embedded in the sport. “Wai” means to bow, and “Kru” means teacher, making this a ritual of respect, gratitude, and mental preparation before battle. Traditionally performed before every match, the Wai Kru consists of graceful, controlled movements set to the sound of Thai wind instruments. Each fighter personalizes their ritual, incorporating motions that honor their lineage, gym, and personal fighting style.

The ceremony is about showing reverence and blessing the fighter with protection and focus before stepping into the ring. Every element, from the Mongkhon (headband) to the Pra Jiad (armbands), carries symbolic weight, passed down through generations of Muay Thai warriors.
